Sadly, family estrangements are not unusual during the caregiving journey. Rifts frequently occur because of distance or minor misunderstandings. In other cases there are more serious abandonment or betrayal issues involved. When family members begin caring for a loved one with dementia, conflict and estrangement often result from burnout, differing opinions on how to provide the best care and financial issues.
This down-to-earth discussion will help professionals guide family caregivers in coping with family estrangements while ensuring quality care for the person with dementia.
